Phantom Ranch & Bright Angel Campground

Outdoor thermometer at Phantom Ranch - Bright Angel Campground
We arrived at Bright Angel Campground at 11:30 AM, where the temp was already registering 120 degrees.  The sign says this thermometer is in the sun, but I see plenty of shade on it.  It felt like a true 120.  The walls of the canyon radiate heat, as though we were in an oven.  Average temperatures at Phantom Ranch reach 108 - 110 in July and August.

Phantom Ranch & Bright Angel Campground
Most hikers leave the Rim early in the morning to arrive at Bright Angel Campground or Phantom Ranch before the heat of the day sets in.  The downhill hike can usually be done in about 4 hours.  Then you get to sit in the oven all day long, hoping it gets cool enough to sleep.
